Stena AB and Stena Line visited by international students

During Unimeet Gothenburg’s company visit to Stena AB and Stena Line on 7th October, international IT students were encouraged to stay curious and open to new experiences. The company visit was organised with the aim of offering participants a unique opportunity to learn more about the industry and expand their professional network.

On 7th October, around 30 international IT students from the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology were welcomed to the headquarters of Stena AB and Stena Line. Both companies are known for their strong focus on sustainability and innovation and are prominent players in their respective markets.

During the visit, the students gained insight into the companies’ history, sustainability goals, and future visions. They were also provided with valuable information about the IT career opportunities offered by Stena, ranging from software engineering to IT support and product ownership – roles designed to cater to a variety of skills and interests within the IT field.

On-site, to meet the participants and talk about the company, were representatives from HR and various IT professionals within the Stena sphere. Among them were Tinnu Mathew John, Product Owner; Ruihua LU, Ship Efficiency Expert; and Dácil Hernández, Head of Business Solutions, all of whom shared their inspiring career journeys and described their roles at Stena. They also provided valuable insights on navigating challenges and experiences in the corporate world, and the key elements in shaping a successful career.

The participants were encouraged to stay curious, embrace continuous learning, and remain open to new experiences. At the end, they were given the opportunity to ask questions and mingle with the company representatives, allowing them to establish new connections and expand their professional networks within the industry.

Nabil Al Sayed was one of the participants whose strong interest in shipping motivated him to take part in the company visit.

“It’s the perfect place for me, as shipping is something that is relevant to me. I study software engineering and was thinking that there might be some opportunities for me at Stena. It was interesting that the speakers were sharing their stories, providing more than just information and insights about the domain. When they share their own stories, we can relate to our own stories as well,” says Nabil Al Sayed.

Unimeet Gothenburg’s ambition in organizing company visits for international students and researchers is to, together with the companies and employers in the Gothenburg region, showcase the city as an attractive workplace and attract future international talents to stay in Gothenburg after completing their studies.

Unimeet Gothenburg is a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, and The Trade & Industry Group at Göteborg & Co, aimed at strengthening the exchange between the universities’ international students and researchers and the business community, creating cultural and social meeting places, as well as networking opportunities.
