Focus on career development for international students

Over a three-month period, more than 120 international students and PhD students took part in Unimeet Gothenburg’s exclusive Career Development Bootcamp. For the first time, the programme was delivered both in person and online, covering topics such as CV writing, intercultural communication and personal branding.

Between February and May, over 120 international students and PhD candidates from Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg took part in Unimeet Gothenburg’s Career Development Bootcamp. Before the programme began, participants had identified career-related challenges they wished to develop in and receive support with, which were addressed during the course of the programme. New for this year was that in-person sessions were followed up with digital meetings, rather than a fully digital bootcamp. This gave students the opportunity to hear from a wide range of speakers within the context of the Swedish labour market. At the first meeting, Anna-Lena Johansson, Head of Competence Management at Business Region Göteborg, spoke about the city’s industries, and Charlotta Brynger, Intercultural Expert at CueMe, gave a talk on how intercultural communication and skills can help to understand and navigate Swedish workplace culture.

CV writing, networking and mentorship were the focus of the second meeting. Matilda Svensson, a career advisor at International House Gothenburg, explained how to tailor your CV to the Swedish job market and gave several examples of how to phrase things in a cover letter. Fredrik Karlsson from Öppet Hus spoke about the importance of mentorship and how networking works in practice. The participants had many questions during the meeting, which led to interesting discussions and a few laughs. At the final session, Nelly Andersson, founder of JTC LinkedIn, spoke about how to build a personal brand and why this is particularly relevant for international students starting their careers in a new culture.

Each in-person session was followed by a digital follow-up meeting organised by Unimeet, together with Chalmers’ career counsellor Kajsa Bengtsson. Speakers from the previous session also attended these meetings, and participants were able to bounce ideas and thoughts off them. Participants were also given a handbook to work through during the bootcamp, which contained hands-on exercises and reflections linked to the content of the sessions.

Participants felt that the programme had been valuable:

–  It reassured things I’ve already heard before and gained some practical skills I could return in the future. I also like the reflection parts of the handbook, it makes me dig deeper in my practice. It has been inspiring, thank you!

–  I’ve learned to apply myself. Step out of my comfort zone and adjust to the Swedish way of doing things in the job market.

–  Overall, the most significant takeaway is the shift from a “job-seeking mindset” to a more strategic and long-term approach to career building, combining personal branding, networking, and continuous learning.

Unimeet Gothenburg is a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, and The Trade & Industry Group at Göteborg & Co, aimed at strengthening the exchange between the universities’ international students and the business community, creating cultural and social meeting places, as well as networking opportunities.
