Career Day gave international students a career nudge in the right direction

On November 12th it was time for Career Day, a yearly career event exclusively for international students at Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg. Around 500 students had the opportunity to attend career-focused seminars, mingle with exhibitors, have a professional photo taken and get their CV reviewed.

Rain did not stop international students from attending Unimeet Gothenburg’s Career Day on November 12th at Chalmers Conference Centre. An event specifically tailored for Gothenburg’s international students, Career Day provides the students with opportunities that may aid them in their career paths in Sweden after graduating. Services such as professional CV photography and individual CV reviews were popular.

Over the course of 3.5 hours, the participants had the opportunity to network with exhibiting companies and organizations; exhibitors at Career Day were Business Region Gothenburg, Coretura, GlobalLogic, Hubbau, International House Gothenburg, Odinwell, Switch to Sweden, Uper Group, Volvo Group, and Zenseact. Career Day has the aim to enhance the international students’ chances of staying and working in the Gothenburg region after completing their studies.

Career Day also offered career seminars; on the importance of networking, career resilience, exploration of career paths in Sweden, cultural differences, and how to write a CV and cover letter. Veronique Ebers, an exchange student from Germany, said the seminar on Career Resilience offered her new perspectives:

– I have visited the Resilience Workshop, which I really like because it was giving me a new perspective on resilience. I also thought it’s something that we all should know and adapt, not even in our jobs, but in our daily life.

Veronique also highlights that this was the best part of Career Day, in her opinion:

– I really liked it. I feel like it helps me more in my life. So I feel like it’s the most sustainable learning I had so far.

Sony Sabu, who is on his final year of his Master’s in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Chalmers, chose to attend Career Day because he will be graduating soon. He hoped to meet people in the industry, to perhaps see what aligns with his background. One can assume that he succeeded:

– The best aspect, I would say, is the opportunity to meet people who are already in the industry, who are day-to-day involved in things that are out there.

Unimeet Gothenburg is a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, and Trade & Industry Group at Göteborg & Co.

The aim of Unimeet Gothenburg is to enhance the image of the Gothenburg region as an attractive place for the universities’ international students and internationally recruited staff to study, live, and work. This is achieved by organising activities to strengthen the connection between studies and working life, creating meeting places and networking opportunities, as well as promoting social and cultural activities.
