On October 10, Gothenburg’s Maritime Museum welcomed around 60 international students to an inspiring lecture about Gothenburg the Port city. The participants also had the opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibitions and aquarium. The event was one of many organised by Unimeet Gothenburg, aimed at showcasing the city’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Around 60 international students, researchers, and staff from Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg visited Gothenburg’s Maritime Museum to attend an inspiring lecture on “Gothenburg the Port city” by the museum pedagogue Ninna Boberg.
The lecture highlighted the city’s history and what makes Gothenburg’s harbour unique. How people, goods, and ideas have travelled across the oceans and how the surrounding world has shaped Gothenburg in various ways. Ninna also explained that the docks and shipyards long dominated work life in the city, with young men often going to sea and ships returning home with valuable cargo. Even today, remnants of the city’s shipbuilding industry can be seen in the form of harbour cranes at Lundbyvass, near Lindholmen.
Since its founding, Gothenburg has been an important trading port for Sweden and is Scandinavia’s largest harbour. Today, much has changed in both the port and the ships. The large container terminal, located on the other side of the bridge “Älvsborgsbron”, handles millions of tons of goods each year—vehicles, clothing, electronics, food, and much more. The world’s largest ships dock here on a weekly basis.
In addition to the lecture, participants had the opportunity to explore the museum’s aquarium and exhibitions that tell the story of Gothenburg the Port City. These featured everything from seafaring experiences, scientific expeditions, beautiful navigational instruments, and mysterious souvenirs as well as the dark history of colonialism.

The activity is one of many organised by Unimeet Gothenburg to showcase the city and all it has to offer. The aim is to help international students, researchers, and university staff explore Gothenburg.
Unimeet Gothenburg is a collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, and The Trade & Industry Group at Göteborg & Co, aimed at strengthening the exchange between the universities’ international students and researchers and the business community, creating cultural and social meeting places, as well as networking opportunities.
